Written in the Stars

Well its a little hard to believe but the weekend just gone was closing weekend of the musical AIDA, presented by Hills Musical Company and in which I was playing the title role of Aida. Everything seems to be flying by but I wanted to take a moment to look back on it.

This was the SA Premiere of this musical with music & lyrics written by Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice and we had a really successful season. For a lot of our audiences they had never heard the music, they may have had an idea of the story as it does follow the story of the Opera Aida but for most it was new and it was such a pleasure to see them enjoy it.

The Director Lauren Scarfe, Choreographer Thomas Phillips and Musical Director Kristy Williamson had a vision and although the process to get this on the stage was not without its challenges, the end result was a wonderful show and everyone worked hard.

It was a pleasure to work opposite Lindsay Prodea and Tegan Gully again. Both did a wonderful job as Radames and Amneris respectively. It is funny to think last year I played Lindsay's mum in Big Fish and this year his lover but we are a good team and audiences seem to love it. One of my favourite numbers from the show was "A Step Too Far" which is the three of us all coming to terms with what is happening with our little love triangle and where our lives are headed. It was fantastic number.

I am so proud of the rest of my cast mates, including my dad Howard who played the role of my dad, the Nubian King. It was such a pleasure to see the work people put in and also they were all a great bunch to work with. From day one, everyone just got on really well and supported one another and for that I am very grateful. Also there were quite a few of my Soul Factor Gospel Choir people attached to this show and it was so lovely to have them about. All up about 11 of us were there. 5 in the actual cast (so proud of them), and then props, dressers and booth singers (including my mum, so you couldn't go wrong there 😉 ). We could not have put on the show without them and I treasure them in my life. They are all so giving of themselves and it is special.

Personally, I do love this role. Playing a strong, female lead is always something I enjoy (probably because Aida was oddly like me in real life haha!) She was a Princess but at times confused as to what she was called to do, she loved and cherished her family, country and people and knew she was a role model. And when the time came she chose to not act selfishly but for the good of all others and this is something I would hope I would do.
Vocally, this role was very good for me. Many people said they believed it was written for me. Yes, my skin colour is not right 😉but it was perfect for my voice. That mixture of belting, gospel, power ballad style with moments of gentleness and emotion and then back to passion. I thoroughly enjoyed singing it and sharing it with people.

Thankyou to Andy Trimmings for allowing me to use his photos!

The reviews were very good. Some of them are below if you want to take a look:

SO there you have it another show done and again I just thank God that I have the opportunity to share with people in this way.

Have a great weekend!

A Dream is a wish your heart makes....

A dream is a wish you heart makes... Do you have a dream? something that you want your life to be? or somewhere you want to go? Are you reaching for it? I have had a dream to be a Mary Kay Director since I joined the company 10 years ago and this month I took a huge step to achieving this. On October 1st I entered into DIQ or Director in Qualification, I now have 4 months to become a Director. I am very excited about this, the timing seemed right and when I do it I will be able to do just Mary Kay and Singing which will be perfect! It is rather scary though because there is a lot of work to be done in those four months, I have to build my team and reach certain production goals and sometimes it seems crazy, but that's the idea of moving up isn't it? taking a leap of faith? So why Directorship you ask? I understand leadership is not for everyone but I have always been drawn to it. I do have a passion for helping women feel good about themselves and I believe that we are...

MMMBop and road trip classics 😉

Road trip singalongs are the best! Do you agree?  What are your favourite songs to sing? Do you have specific lists or eras or styles of music you listen/sing to?  For me it usually depends who I am travelling with but nothing beats a good 80s/90s song list.... So last weekend I was on a road trip to Halls Gap with my sister, my brother in law and my niece and nephew. We had a fabulous time singing away the hours to many a favourite. Of course the kids occasionally asked for a song they knew but we thought it was important we listened to the classics haha 😜 We headed to Halls Gap for NanaFest 2019! A weekend to celebrate the 90th Birthday of my Nana Dawn. Staying in cabins and tents the family came from Victoria and SA and shared a weekend of catching up, a party, jumping pillows and bonfires. I do love my family, there is a a lot of us and it is lovely to see the all the generations interacting and enjoying each others company. We had wonderful weather and m...

"Oh what a Beautiful Morning, Oh what a Beautiful Day...."

"Oh what a Beautiful Morning, Oh what a Beautiful Day......" Well actually its been a beautiful week! I did have the absolute privilege to play Laurey in Oklahoma! presented live on Four Oaks Farm in Littlehampton SA. It was such a beautiful setting to be in everyday, trees, fresh air, animals in the paddocks around and one rather show stealing peacock!! The cast was fabulous, the orchestra amazing and the sound superb (Tim Freedman, Allpro Audio  love your work!!). At the risk of sounding cheesy it was a magical experience. From the moment that Curly rides along the ridge on his horse (an actual horse!) singing "Oh what a Beautiful Morning" people were captivated. It was such a labour of love for all of us, and to see the joy in people's faces was so wonderful. This production was the idea of Emma Knights from Emma Knights Productions and along with some other wonderful people who captured the vision of it all as well, it actua...
